Lust, Anger, Love
by Maureen Canning

Lust, Anger, Love explores the deep issues related to compulsive sexual behaviors including early childhood trauma and the sexual templates developed through one’s psychosexual development. In addition to exploring sexual issues faced by both men and women, the book looks at both sides of the cycle of addiction - the acting-out as well as the acting-in or aversion to sex. We see how sexual compulsions are products of early childhood abuse and how behavioral patterns develop, ranging from the most violent to the subtlest and most common. Canning also delves into the various traumatic injuries that result from abuse, and illustrates how various compulsive behaviors grow out of them. Canning writes that the overriding emotion that sexually compulsive people feel toward the partners with whom they seek intimacy is anger yoked to shame. This sexualized anger yields a false sense of security and power, - an “aggressive grandiosity” that gives the illusion of personal power, and that destroys any chance for healthy intimacy.
